Electing Kevin Melcher to the Board of Regents

Nevada’s Board of Regents is the governing body for the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). The system is made up of: the University of Nevada, Reno; UNLV; four community colleges, including TMCC; Nevada State College; and the Desert Research Institute.

Kevin Melcher previously served as a Regent from 2011-2016 and is prepared to return to an NSHE leadership position. Kevin spent 22 years as a K-12 administrator. He has also served in leadership positions for numerous nonprofit boards, foundations and college and university committees. Kevin is currently the vice-chairperson for the Community Foundation of Western Nevada and an active member of the Rotary Club of Reno. It is critical to elect a Regent with strong and varied leadership experience for Northern Nevada to be well represented.

About me

Mission and Vision

Support leadership
at all levels
Support of
quality research
Workforce growth
in our region

It is an important time for the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and strong experienced leadership is needed. New Presidents at the University of Nevada, Reno and UNLV as well as a Chancellor for NSHE will be in place soon. Kevin understands the importance of working with and supporting higher education leaders as they advance our institutions. Kevin Melcher has the experience needed to lead the Board of Regents through these times of change.

I enjoy listening to and working alongside students to assist them in being successful as they attend a community college, university, graduate school, medical school or law school. During my first term on the Board of Regents, I established a positive working relationship with all eight NSHE institution administrations, faculty, students, staff and their communities. I look forward to supporting higher education throughout Nevada once again.

I will help minimize the “North vs South” divide so Nevada can become the best we can be.

My experience in working with Health Sciences including the UNR School of Medicine, Physician Assistant program is important in the continued growth of medical education in Nevada. Having chaired the NSHE Investment Committee, I will be able to assist NSHE in being quality stewards of public money, student fees, tuition and other sources.

I enjoy working with our community colleges to provide student opportunities in areas of technology and workforce development. Our community colleges are playing an important role in meeting the new and growing workforce needs in Northern Nevada.

I look forward to helping develop strong academic pipelines between Nevada’s community colleges and university academics. I will work for quality research in all areas to help our institutions remain top tier research universities and support the Desert Research Institute in continued international leadership.
